The Difference Between Strain and Grace
Have you ever looked at a long-legged wading bird, like the Pied Stilt (Poaka) and noticed the sheer grace of its posture? It stands tall, seemingly weightless, moving with an effortless ease. It's a vision of elegance.

At the Wave Wellness Studio, our principles are literally painted on the walls. Our two model Pied Stilts, Sterling and Sasha, are forever present, standing tall as a constant visual reminder of this exact feeling.
Look closer, on the wall, you’ll see our feathered friends: Sally, Sid, and Sybil poised with their own beautifully elongated legs . And soaring high above them is Seymour the seagull, mid-flight, perfectly embodying the space and grace that active length creates. Our seagulls are lovingly referred to by us as "The Squabbles".

Contrast that image with the feeling of your own body at the end of a long tiring day: perhaps compressed, heavy, and resisting movement. Over the course of a day, we shrink 1-2cm in height as gravity works on us, compressing our intervertebral discs squeezing out water.
The difference between these two states is the principle of Elongation.
Elongation isn't just about passive stretching; it is a fundamental Wave Wellness CREST principle that teaches you how to actively find space and grace in every motion. It’s the intentional effort of pulling apart what gravity is constantly trying to compress.
Join us as we explore how adopting the poise of the Pied Stilt (Poaka), and indeed all our long-legged avian friends, allows us to unlock a deeper, more profound sense of ease and freedom, transforming not just how we move, but how we feel—from the Core outward.
Defining Elongation (one of the Wave Wellness CREST Principles)
So, what exactly is Elongation in the context of Wave Wellness?
It's not simply "stretching." Our definition is:
The active lengthening of the body and spine to create space and grace in every motion.
The key word here is "active." Think of it like a piece of elastic: you're gently pulling it from both ends to create more length and tension, rather than just letting it hang loose. In your body, this means an intentional, conscious effort to find more space. It’s the feeling of your spine growing taller, your limbs reaching further, and your joints finding more freedom, all driven by your inner awareness.
This active lengthening counteracts gravity and our daily habits that may compress us. It’s an upward energy, a reaching out, to find lightness within.
Elongation in Practice (The How-To)
So, how do we translate the poised elegance of the Pied Stilts, Sterling and Sasha, into tangible movement? The practice of Elongation starts with our spine, our central current of energy.
The key is a working two actions at the same time,: finding and focusing on an anchor point while actively reaching away from it.
Cue to Try: The Oystercatcher

Think of the Oystercatchers we often see on the beach . They stand firm on their long, grounded legs, but their necks and beaks are poised and long, ready to move with precision.
Here is the cue to take off the mat and into your day:
The Anchor (Stability): Wherever you are (seated at a desk, standing in a supermarket queue), feel your Stability, your feet or sit bones, press firmly down.
The Reach (Elongation): Now, without losing your anchor, begin to draw the crown of your head directly up to the ceiling.
Cue to try: "Anchor like an Oystercatcher's legs, and reach like its neck, finding maximum length through your spine."
Creating Grace and Power in Movement
Elongation isn't just about standing tall; it's about moving with grace and controlled power. When you elongate first, you create space for every joint to move freely.
In Power Vinyasa Yoga (Aeroplane pose): This is a brilliant example of active Elongation. As you extend into Aeroplane, you are not just lifting your leg; you are intentionally creating a single, unbroken line of length through your entire spine and body, from the crown of your head all the way back to your heel.
In Pilates (Bird Dog): From a tabletop position, as you extend opposite limbs out, you are not just lifting them; you are intentionally lengthening them away from your central anchor. The goal is to create maximum length through your entire body, from your fingertips to your heel .
This active lengthening is what gives movement its grace and its power—it makes transitions smooth, controlled, and intentional.
Elongation in Your Life (Beyond your Mat)
The real magic of Elongation happens off your mat, in the moments when you are on your daily commute, sitting at your desk, or facing a difficult conversation.
When we feel challenged, stressed, or rushed, our default physical reaction is compression. Our shoulders hunch, our jaw clenches, and our breath becomes shallow. We shrink away from the pressure and hide, we go into protect mode (sometimes this is handy in times of real danger; however, mostly in our modern world, the situations we're referring to here may trigger our stress response but are not life threatening).
Think of Elongation is an antidote. It's a conscious choice to:
Create Mental Space: By actively lengthening your spine, you instantly counteract physical compression, giving your diaphragm more room to draw a deep breath. This deeper breath creates the pause needed to avoid a rushed or reactive decision.
Feel Stability: When you consciously ground your feet into the earth and reach your crown of your head to the ceiling (practicing the Oystercatcher cue), you access your physical and mental Stability. You are stable, you are anchored, and you can handle the current situation from a place of length and poise.
Encourage Flow: A body that is long and graceful is a body that encourages energy to flow without blockage. Whether you're moving through a Pilates transition or navigating a busy shopping aisle, moving from a place of length means moving with less effort and more ease.
Living with Length and Looking Ahead

Elongation is more than just a technique; it is a way of being. It's the daily practice of remembering that you have the internal power to create space where there is pressure.
We invite you to carry the imagery of our Pied Stilts, Sterling and Sasha, and our leggy seagulls, Sally, Sid, and Sybil (and flying Seymour) with you this week. Take one moment every day to actively find your length. Stand tall, breathe deep, and embody the Elongation principle.
