Your Core: Finding Your Powerhouse in any situation

Where does true, lasting strength and unwavering stability truly come from? The secret lies at your centre: your Core.

I see my Core as my powerhouse in every situation. Whether I am consciously centering to deliver my Paku Mihi (short introduction) during a recent welcome onto a Marae (more on that experience shortly!), cornering smoothly in my car, or holding a challenging yoga pose, the central connection in my body is my point of control.

The Core is far more than the superficial layer six-pack we may see printed on a novelty apron at a Christmas BBQ; it is the deep, central powerhouse for all movement. It includes many more muscles than just your abs, serving as the foundation for every posture and transition, and, crucially, the anchor for your Stability when facing a challenging situation.

Without a connected core, our movements are clumsy, our posture suffers, and we rely on momentum as we move instead of intention. At Wave Wellness, we believe connecting to your centre is the starting point for personal transformation and growth—you start at your centre and radiate outwards.

The Wave Wellness Philosophy: The Limpet Connection

To understand the kind of strength we cultivate, look to the shoreline. Your core is your internal anchor, and its unwavering force is beautifully represented by the humble but mighty Limpet that clings to rocks around the New Zealand coast.

I look with wonder at the patterns on a limpet shell (a few from the WW collection above!)—their distinct striations, varying shapes, and each shell telling its own story of what it has weathered.

This small, unassuming animal possesses a single, powerful foot muscle that creates a suction force strong enough to defy the powerful waves. It is the ultimate embodiment of an unwavering inner Core, resisting the chaos of the tide by anchoring itself to its foundation.

Your core is your Limpet—it’s the muscular, strong, and reliable anchor that enables you to face every external force without being swept away. I felt this connection recently when delivering my Paku Mihi as a visitor on a Marae. While standing up, somewhat nervously beneath the surface, I placed my attention into my Core. That gentle, reassuring engagement was the key to my upright posture and the Stability I needed in that moment where I felt exposed. I'm always tuned into my core, deriving both my physical and mental strength through my centre.

Finding Your Core in Every Modality

The great thing about this Limpet-like strength is that it serves as the foundation for everything, whether you are finding stillness or generating dynamic movements.

While our Mat Pilates classes will dive deeply into this through the exploration of the Wave Wellness CREST principles (Core, Respiration, Elongation, Stability, Timing)—which map to the traditional Pilates principles—you can discover this foundational strength in every Wave Wellness practice. We believe in mindful movement and wise ways through all of our dynamic and restorative practices:

In Dynamic Practice

  • Power Vinyasa Yoga: Your core acts as the internal fire that fuels your transitions. You maintain Stability in your poses and move with intention . A connected core transforms your practice from strain into an easeful flow.

  • Mat Pilates: This is where we use our Core as the deep, central current. Every movement begins and ends here. We use the Core to create stability, particularly through our pelvis, enabling us to move our limbs from a sure anchor point.

In Restorative & Mindful Practice

  • Yin Yoga: While Yin is about releasing tension, the Core is still the quiet anchor. It's the subtle strength that maintains your spinal integrity and allows your outer limbs and connective tissues to safely soften and fully release deep into a pose.

  • Meditation & Journalling: Here, the core is a metaphor for your point of mental Stability. When your thoughts become swirling currents, the practice of returning to your breath and centre—your physical Core—is what gives you the ability to observe the eddies without being swept away by them. It transforms anxious sensations into a grounding reassurance.

Ready to Find your Core?

The steadfast strength of the Limpet is waiting to be uncovered in every class you take with Wave Wellness. A strong, mindful Core is the starting point for both physical grace and profound personal transformation.

We hope you're excited to start this journey!

Next time, we’ll dive into the concept of Respiration, we'll explore how the deep-diving habits of the Little Penguin (Kororā) can teach you to harness your breath and truly ride the wave.
